ATV trails, rainforest rivers, waterfalls and canopy walks — the adventures worth building a day around.
The stretch of coast around Jacó packs an unusual amount of variety into a small area. Ocean on one side, rainforest and mountains on the other, and everything within about an hour of the villa.
Guided ATV routes climb from the coast into the hills, crossing rivers and running through palm plantations and rainforest before finishing at viewpoints over the Pacific. They suit first-timers and experienced riders alike, and the guides pace the day to the group.
The rivers inland from Jacó run through deep rainforest and offer everything from gentle family floats to genuinely big water. It is one of the best ways to see the interior of the country in a single day, and transport, guides and equipment are all arranged.
Several waterfalls are within easy reach, some with pools you can swim in. They are best in the greener months when the water is at its fullest, and best visited early before the afternoon crowds and rain.
Ziplines and suspended bridges put you up in the rainforest canopy, which is where most of the wildlife actually is. It is an easy half-day, and a good option for mixed-ability groups since the pace is gentle and the views are immediate.
Just north of Jacó, Carara is one of the best places in Costa Rica to see scarlet macaws, along with monkeys, sloths and crocodiles on the river below. Go early, take a guide, and give it a full morning.
Jacó is a surf town with consistent waves and plenty of schools offering lessons. Playa Herradura, closer to Los Sueños, is calmer and better for swimming. Both are straightforward half-days that leave time for the villa afterwards.
You do not need to over-plan. Pick one adventure per day, keep the afternoons free, and let the concierge handle transport and timing so nothing runs late.
