Fishing in Los Sueños

Los Sueños Marina was built for fishing, and the water off Costa Rica's central Pacific is one of the few places where you can realistically chase a grand slam in a single day. It is a serious destination — and it is also very accessible for first-timers.

What makes this water special

The continental shelf drops away quickly offshore, bringing deep, warm water close to the coast. That combination puts billfish within a short run of the marina rather than a full day's steam, which is why so many records have come out of this stretch of ocean.

What runs when

Pacific sailfish peak from December through April, with good numbers either side. Marlin — blue, black and striped — show up through the same period and into the greener months. Tuna and dorado are present year-round and make for excellent eating, which matters when you have a chef back at the villa.

Inshore and offshore

Offshore trips run for the billfish and larger pelagics. Inshore trips work the coastline for roosterfish, snapper, jack and mackerel, and are often the better choice for families or shorter days. Both leave from the same dock, minutes from most Los Sueños villas.

Full day or half day

A full day gives you the best range and the best odds offshore. A half day is usually enough inshore, and is a good option if you would rather be back at the pool by lunchtime. We can arrange either, with the boat and captain matched to your group.

What to bring

Rods, tackle, bait and licences are handled by the charter. Bring sun protection — hat, long sleeves, high-factor sunscreen — and a soft bag rather than a hard case. If you plan to keep fish for dinner, tell the captain at the start of the day and we will have the chef ready for it.
