Calm beaches, wildlife, canopy walks and the kind of villa days that work with children of any age.
The central Pacific coast is genuinely easy with children. Distances are short, the water is warm, wildlife is everywhere, and a private villa removes most of the friction that makes family holidays tiring.
Playa Herradura, close to Los Sueños, is sheltered and good for swimming. Jacó has more surf and more energy, which suits older children and teenagers. Both are short drives, and neither requires a full day.
Scarlet macaws, monkeys, sloths and iguanas are all easy to find around Carara National Park and along the coast. A guided morning walk is usually the highlight of a family trip, and it is gentle enough for young children.
Family rafting runs on calmer sections of the rainforest rivers, with guides who make it fun rather than intimidating. It is a good introduction to adventure for children who are comfortable in water.
Ziplines and hanging bridges work well for mixed-age groups, since everyone moves at their own pace and the views are immediate. Check minimum ages when booking — they vary by operator.
The most popular family day is often the simplest: the private pool, shade on the terrace, and a chef cooking lunch. Having a house rather than a hotel room means naps, snacks and downtime happen on your own schedule.
Whatever you choose, front-load the day. Mornings are cooler and clearer, and afternoons are best spent at the pool. It is a rhythm that works for children and adults alike.
Keep the days short, pick one activity each, and let the villa do the rest. If you tell us the ages in your group, we will suggest activities that actually fit.
